Do you ever question why you never have anything to wear but have a full closet of clothes? Well, we're here to hopefully alleviate some of that stress off your shoulders. Today, we’re going to go through the steps you can take to create a carefully curated wardrobe. In the process, you will learn how to: declutter, earn some cash, and essentially love your closet. This process can take some time, but the results are incredible. With these few tips and tricks spend less time putting outfits together and more time having fun!

Step 1: Get Real With Yourself.

The first thing you have to do is be honest with yourself. Most women have cluttered closets because they are either purchasing things that don’t fit their bodies, their style, or their real-life needs so, you keep buying, but you feel like you have nothing to wear.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when cleaning up your closet.

  • What is your closet can you live without, and what can you possibly end up donating or selling?
  • Do you still wear it?
  • Is it wearing out?
  • Do you see yourself wearing it within the next few months?

You can really learn a lot about your personal style through this because you’ll be analyzing pretty much everything you own. We recommend keeping crucial items that have neutral colors and simple silhouettes to really maximize your choices, but this shouldn’t limit you from having those statement pieces.

Try to limit yourself to about 40-50 pieces.

Step 2: Make a Statement

Be Bold! This is where you can really have fun with your outfits. A statement piece is that one article of clothing that showcases who you are. It could be that really cool studded jacket,  unique embroidered jeans, or just a very trendy top!

Ask yourself these questions when choosing those stunning statements.

  • Does this piece work with multiple outfits in your closet?
  • Are these articles of clothing hot this season?
  • Does this elevate my style or is it just unnecessary clothing?

This is the fun part! Be you! The more you feel confident in your clothes the better the statement you make.

Step 3: Back to the Basics

Every woman needs basics because they pull her outfits together. These items help showcase your statement pieces. They help you pair your stylish pieces more easily, and an intentionally curated array of basics will make mixing and matching pieces easier in the future.

Examples of excellent basics include:

Having a great choice of basics can really help cut down the time needed to make decisions about future pairing, so make sure you take time to look at the garment look at how it’s made. Make sure it’s durable and well-sewn. This will ensure you will be able to wear these items multiple ways.

Step 4: Buh-Bye Unwanted Clothes

Most women have a tendency to just store unwanted clothing thinking they’ll wear them again, but it’s time to get rid of them. There are multiple ways to rid of your clothes, and it’s both beneficial to the environment and yourself. By recycling, donating, or selling your clothes you are helping the world by not needlessly creating new waste and essentially helping the environment.

Ways to getting Rid of Your Clothes:

  • Consignment stores buy and trade clothing. Sell back your unwanted clothing. This is a perfect way to make a little cash for a whole new outfit.
  • Some stores have recycling options where you can drop off your used and unwanted clothes which are later sorted through and recycled accordingly.
  • Goodwill or recycle boxes donate your worn, outdated, or ill-fitting clothing to a good cause. Your trash maybe someone else’s designer jeans.

Step 5: “Accessorizing!”

Now that your closet is much more curated to your liking, accessorizing is the last step. This gives it that extra “pow!” to really pull your outfit together. Learn to play with different accessories to see what works best for you. This can really transform your outfit!

Examples of Accessorizing

  • Jewelry:  a nice ring or a chain necklace is a great addition to really dress up an outfit.
  • Hats or Hair Accessories: Grab a dad hat or a fun oversized beanie for those casual days or dress it up with a cool headband or beret for the night look.
  • Belts: have a plain black belt, a funky western, or a chained belt to help break the outfit apart; also a great summer accessory when it gets too hot.
  • Scarves: these are a very versatile accessory because depending on the style you can make them into a belt, a head wrap, or a tie around your neck.
  • Handbags: Not only for function, a gray clutch or cognac crossbody bag can add an entirely new tone to an outfit. Hold on only to bags that are in good shape, and work well for your lifestyle.

If you ever feel like your closet is too thoughtful, accessories can give new life to pieces with very little investment. (Most accessories also always fit, no matter how your weight fluctuates.)

You’re definitely ready to kill the fashion game now! With these tips and tricks, we hope you have a cleaner less cluttered closet that really embraces your personal style. When you’re ready to add more items create a Pinterest board of what you love to refine your style even more. Continue this cycle every season (which is about 2-3 months) and you’ll see that you’re going to look great on a budget.
